HUNDREDS of people travelled to Bathurst from all over Australia to join in the National Douglas Motorcycle Rally last week.
The event, celebrating 100 years of motorcycle racing in Australia, concluded on Saturday night following a successful four days of historic action.
Bathurst was only recently discovered to be the location of the first motorcycle race.
“It [the title] was mistakenly given to Goulburn and it’s only in the last 12 months we’ve been able to prove it was us,” organiser Geoff Fry said.
The rally’s schedule was jam-packed with plenty of activities to keep visitors and locals immersed in the culture of motorcycle racing.
There were plenty of great rides out to significant locations, including Mount Panorama, Chifley Dam and a ride around the original Kirkconnell Circuit.
“The roads are fantastic for what we were doing with those machines,” Mr Fry said.
Perhaps the biggest highlight of the rally was the Bike Show and Fair at Kings Parade on Friday afternoon. There were close to 100 motorbikes on display from Bathurst locals and visitors.
Many of the motorcycles were of the Douglas make, and fortunately Lindsay Douglas, the great great granddaughter of the original builder John Douglas was there to enjoy the vast array.
The Bike Show proved very popular, according to Mr Fry.
“It was pretty congested,” he said.
“It was hard to move amongst the bikes due to all the people.”
