Tomorrow should reach a top of 30 degrees, while Friday will be a scorcher with a maximum of 36 degrees.
Chifley NSW Rural Fire Service Zone team manager superintendent Tom Shirt said the biggest concern for firefighters is Friday’s predicted weather.
“We are concerned about Friday, there’s a front coming in behind it and we’re concerned about lightning strikes,” he said. “That’s what started the major fires in our area earlier this year ... lightning started 20 fires in one front.”
Another common cause of fires during the warmer months is human error including sparks produced by machinery such as lawnmowers, whipper snippers, welders and slashers.
“We had an incident the other day when someone was mowing and it started a fire and we were very lucky they reported that very quickly,” Superintendent Shirt said.
Fire and Rescue NSW Bathurst station officer Sandy Collins said firefighters were also called to the Great Western Highway, at the corner of Nile Street, on Monday after a lawnmower started a grass fire.
“These workers were mowing the lawn on the edge of the road and it started a little grass fire,” he said. “If the conditions are right a grass fire will move very, very quickly.
“People think a grass fire is not as dangerous as a bush fire, but it can kill you just as quick. It can outrun a person if the conditions are right.”
Superintendent Shirt said grasslands across Chifley Zone, particularly in the north-west, have started to dry out. Activities including mowing, slashing and welding should be avoided tomorrow and Friday due to the sparks these machines can produce.
If you see an unattended fires call triple-0, as the response time is quicker than if people call their local fire station.
