WAYNE Sellers will lead the newest edition of the Bathurst under 21s side into battle against the Blue Mountains when the 2014-15 Mitchell Cricket Council colts premiership commences on Sunday.
Bathurst will travel away for the match with a squad missing last season’s captain Blake Aubin as well as his brother Kyle, Jeremy Judge, Derryn Clayton, James Smith and Callum White.
It means younger players like Scott Wilds and Redbacks import Charlie Morris will get their first chance with the side against the gradually improving Cattle Pups.
Former Bathurst 21s captain Joey Coughlan will coach the side.
“It is a nice honour to be named captain, I’ve done it in the past with junior sides, but it has been a while,” ORC batsman Sellers said.
“We have a fairly young side but I’ve played with or against most of the other guys in it before, so I don’t think that’s going to be much of a problem, and all of them have played rep cricket in the past.
“It would be nice to start with a win, that would take some of the pressure off straight away, with only four round matches if you drop the first one you’re under pressure from the start.”
Sellers is in robust form with the willow for the Tigers at first grade level, hitting 94 and an unbeaten 73 in his last two knocks.
His form for the 21s last season verged on impressive, but he was continually sent back to the pavilion after getting a start.
Knocks of 24, 34, 30 and 37 all saw him get established before perishing.
It was a frustrating situation for a player who had produced one of the most memorable representative knocks of the last decade just a season earlier against Parkes when he blazed a freak century at the Sportsground for the opens team.
“I made a lot of starts obviously, a few times I threw it away and in a couple of the other innings’ I was a bit unlucky, 30s don’t win matches I guess,” he said.
“I feel a bit more responsibility to lead the way now, naturally as captain that’s your job. I’ve got a lot of confidence in the other players there as well though.”
The 2013-14 campaign was an unusually unsuccessful one for the Bathurst team who qualified third for the finals, defeated Lithgow and were then humbled by Orange in the preliminary final.
In their most recent match against the Blue Mountains, Bathurst were on the verge of total humiliation at 8-45 before a brilliant hundred from Blake Aubin and 45 from James Tristram helped them to 9-227.
Tristram, who is in the squad for Sunday’s game, backed it up with 5-27 as the Blue Mountains were dismissed for 149.
“They are a pretty strong side still, Alex Crowther is a very good player and could be a match-winner for them,” Sellers said. “If we play our best though I think we’re good enough to beat anyone in the competition and I’m confident we’ll start with a win this weekend.”
