Catherine Louise Straney, 45, of Shoalhaven Street in Nowra, did not appear before Bathurst Local Court, instead writing a letter indicating her guilt and telling magistrate Michael Allen she regretted her actions.
Straney said she was a mother trying to protect her child but that she must learn to trust police and have respect for them.
Police facts tendered to the court told how at 1.45pm on September 29 this year police were in the process of a traffic stop for Zac Kessey in Larsen Street in relation to a number of traffic offences. At the time a number of his family members, including Straney, gathered around the police.
As police approached, Straney started yelling at them: “Ya not [expletive] taking him I’ll smash this dog in the face.”
As Kessey was being arrested Straney rushed towards police, attempting to break their hold on her son. She tried to grab the hands of arresting officers as well as placing herself between police and her son.
Police pushed her back and warned her to get away or she would be arrested.
Other police arrived at the scene and, as police were arresting Straney’s son, they told her she was not welcome at the police station.
Straney said to the officer: “I’ll see you one night, I’ll remember your face” which was taken as a threat and an attempt to intimidate the officer.
Mr Allen convicted Straney of resisting / hindering police in the execution of their duty and fined her $400.
