DAUGHTER upstaged father at Bathurst Paceway on Wednesday night when the Gemma Hewitt-trained Promises Galore got home in a narrow win over the 2,260m distance.
Promises Galore ($2.70), who led for the entire trip, managed to hold off Bernie Hewitt by a short half head as he drove home a flying Kenny Dee Dee ($6.90). Bohemian Art ($13.10) was a metre and a half back in third.
Mat Rue worked Promises Galore hard when the gates went back, and when he got to the pegs he never relinquished the position. Kenny Dee Dee sat at the rear of the field in the outside file, but on the last lap worked three wide around the whole field in an impressive, and almost perfectly-timed, finish.
The American Ideal out of As Promised mare is the only horse under Gemma Hewitt’s care, but after such a short time in her stable she’s already got quite a strike rate building.
Hewitt purchased the mare off the previous owners, who had put the horse in her dad’s care, and couldn’t be happier with her progress.
“It was a good opportunity and she’s a good horse for me to work with,” she said.
“We were hoping to get the front, we were a bit worried about the one, but we were glad to get there because then we could control the race a bit.
“We’ll keep racing her around Bathurst for now and try to pick up some money here and there. She’s a very consistent horse and she always tries very hard. The main reason I bought her was because she’s such a good horse to work on and do anything with.”
While Promises Galore led the field out of gate three, Bohemian Art took advantage of the number one gate to take a sit behind. Hand For Tilly briefly held the death seat.
That spot was taken by race favourite Alwynsart ($2.30), driven hard by Amanda Turnbull three wide from her second row start to be the new outside leader.
That saw the two best-backed runners receive the bell at the front.
Around the back, Bernie Hewitt began his effort from well back in the field and the favourite didn’t have an answer as he tired on the home turn.
With Bohemian Art unable to contend from the sprint lane, it came down to a two horse finish, with Promises Galore winning in a mile rate of 1:59.8.
