During that time 2276 fines have been issued, with Gilmour Street at Kelso the most common place motorists get nabbed.

A total of 1709 fines were issued on Gilmore Street, with the mobile speed camera car patrolling northbound (752 fines) and southbound (957 fines) motorists.

Fines totalling $246,392 have been issued for this one stretch of road, which represents 72.8 per cent of the $338,268 in revenue received from fines in Bathurst. 

The Great Western Highway in Kelso is also another hot spot for authorities, with 524 fines worth $82,066 issued ($58,877 westbound and $23,189 eastbound).

Of the nine locations regularly patrolled, the Mid Western Highway at Evans Plains came in next, with 15 fines worth $3828 issued over the four-year period.

A recent NSW Centre for Road Safety report said by the end of 2013, the mobile speed camera program included 13 marked vehicles operating across 640 locations over approximately 930 hours of enforcement per month.

The program will continue to expand this year and, once complete, will include 45 marked vehicles operating for 7000 enforcement hours per month at around 2500 locations.

The report said speed enforcement helps reduce the number of drivers who exceed the speed limit on NSW roads.

“[This] in turn reduces the risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash and the severity of outcomes in the event of a crash,” the report said.

“Mobile speed cameras produce a sustained change in driver behaviour by creating a perception that speeding can be enforced anywhere, at any time.

“Mobile speed cameras can be moved around the road network at various times and locations.”

Under NSW legislation, all revenue from camera-detected speeding and red light offences must be paid into the Community Road Safety Fund.

The fund is used for a range of road safety programs, education, enhanced NSW Police force breath and drug testing, and the rollout of flashing lights across NSW schools.
