MORE than a week ago Bathurst Regional Council marked lines in George Street to encourage motorists to park at a 45 degree angle.

The Western Advocate asked its Facebook fans if they thought this was a good idea.
A lot of people agreed with the concept and thought it should be extended to the rest of the Central Business District, while others thought it wouldn’t make any difference what council did – people would continue to park at all kinds of angles regardless of the lines.
Some of our readers felt that the lines don’t take account of the size of vehicles, and others expressed concerns that it is nothing more than a future revenue raiser for council.
“The same fools will get it wrong,” Amy Bryant said.
“This is going to be hilarious. They can’t reverse park 45 degrees anyway, so how are they going to do it between lines,” VanDel Allwood-Soden said.
“If one driver gets it wrong, the whole row becomes less or more than 45 degrees,” Lyn Scaysbrook added.
However, Peter Tzanellis said the whole CBD should be done.
“Six points and $880 fine for anyone who parks at 90 degrees. That would sort it out pretty quick,” Adam De Real Fearns said.
“Have a look in the shopping centres. People have enough trouble parking straight and between the lines,” Brad Denning said.
However, Pam Jacobs saw it a little differently, saying “If you are a self acknowledged ‘bad parker’ it will just make things harder,” she said.
“Being an “incomer” who has just (almost) mastered reverse angle parking, it scares me.”
Wayne Anonimouse pointed out that some cars are very wide, some are very thin and two of them could fit in one spot.
“Now a bike and smaller cars will take up as much space as an SUV because of the lines, which means less parking spots,” he said.
“Make sure there’s some wide bays there and maybe make spots for bikes and smaller cars, because one size bay does not fit all.”
Joshua Luke Lewis said it sounds more like revenue raising.
“This is how it all starts, first the markings, then the meters then all you clowns can have a real whinge,” Volkan Gunduz added.
Steve Limbrick added his voice, saying that it is about time this was done.
He said there will be a lot more space for parking available when everyone has to park within a prescribed space instead of leaving 4-5 feet (or more) between each car, as often happens at the moment.
“Great idea,” Leigh Hands said. “People might learn how to park instead of taking up two spots.”
“Had to laugh at the line-up of cars that were parked at anything but a 45 degree angle on George Street yesterday – a whole lot of perfectly aligned white lines on the road and a whole lot of cars parked wherever they pleased,” Nicole Pheils said.
Road safety advocate Matthew Irvine feels the move was unnecessary. He felt council could have marked the disabled bays and added some guidelines at strategic places along each block.
“The whole street is overkill. I also don’t buy the argument that the streets are too narrow for 60 degree parking. It works in Orange and Mudgee,” he said.
Tracey Di Falco, however, feels it’s about time because so many drivers need lessons in what 45 degrees looks like.
Jess Woolbank feels the same way.
“I think it’s great. If you can’t park between two fluorescent white lines then you shouldn’t be driving. It’s part of the driving test to get your licence,” she said.
“It’s good that they’re giving people time to practice, and I think parking fines should be issued in the future.”
