The dramatic two-car accident on the corner of Dunkeld Road, 11 kilometres west of Bathurst, left a Suzuki four-wheel-drive engulfed in flames and sitting amid long, dry grass.
Hot, windy weather then whipped up the flames into a grassed area near an unoccupied home on Evans Plains Road.
Aged in their late 30s, the two female drivers were taken to Bathurst Hospital with “non life-threatening” injuries, according to Chifley Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Glenn Cogdell.
The accident, and resulting blaze, left firefighters scrambling to stop a property on Evans Plains Road catching alight.
Bathurst Fire and Rescue NSW station officer Peter Willard said the fast-moving fire was spurred on by hot temperatures and winds towards the unoccupied home.
“There was a fast-moving grass fire that came within a foot of the property,” he said.
This was the second accident at the intersection in the past month, with four people injured a two-car accident on October 20.
The 29-year-old female driver of one vehicle was airlifted to Sydney with critical injuries.
Three men, aged 65, 66 and 75, in the other vehicle were also injured.
Inspector Cogdell has called on any witnesses to the accident on Thursday to contact Bathurst Police Station on 6332 8699.
