In unprecedented scenes, the Great Race was put on hold and the V8 Supercars were parked on the grid for about an hour midway through the day-long action while frantic repair work was carried out.
After extensive testing of the type of mix used to resurface the track, the Sydney-based company responsible for the job is planning to return to Bathurst next week to re-lay the sections that disintegrated.
Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris went on to take the chequered flag in the drama-charged race.
The day’s events certainly put the pressure on council staff at the track, led by circuit manager Mark Rayner.
Television images showed Mr Rayner standing on Griffins Bend at turn two talking on his mobile to get advice on how to get the race back on track.
Similar problems were being experienced at The Dipper in the Esses.
Council staff placed a glue-like resin mixture into the broken-up areas of the circuit before the action resumed.
Amazingly, the patch-up held under pressure and the race was able to proceed to the finish.
City engineer Doug Patterson said yesterday the repair work would not cost ratepayers a cent as it is covered as part of the original contract.
He said the temporary repairs made on race day were carried out with advice from a consultant attached to V8 Supercars.
“As a result, the same type of temporary resin as used in similar instances at other circuits around Australia was put down,” Mr Patterson said.
