The Cancer Council’s latest campaign calls on the next NSW Government to take action to reduce the risk of people in NSW getting cancer and to improve the quality of life for sufferers and their carers.
Yesterday’s launch was an opportunity for members of the community to hear about the proposed changes to help beat cancer.
The five most important actions highlighted were for the next government to address the sale of tobacco; to improve cancer services for Aboriginal people; address chemotherapy co-payments; address access to care co-ordination; and increase palliative care services.
The launch was opened by mayor Gary Rush and featured several speakers, including palliative care doctors and representatives from NSW Health.
Member for Bathurst Paul Toole also addressed the room, acknowledging the need for cancer care to be improved.
“There are gaps, and it’s not going to happen overnight, but we do have to address these issues,” he said.
Mr Toole also spoke thoughtfully about the work the Cancer Council and cancer support agencies in Bathurst do for patients and thanked Fiona Markwick and Councillor Graeme Hanger for continuing to bring the issues to his attention.
