Well-respected local GPs, Dr John Sandra and Dr Jim Blackwood, have been honoured for 35 years of service to the Bathurst community at the prestigious 2014 Rural Medical Service Awards.

The Rural Medical Service Awards recognises GPs who have provided long-standing medical service to the people of rural, regional and remote New South Wales.
Dr Sandra and Dr Blackwood’s awards were presented by the NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN) during their annual Rural GPs Conference dinner held in Sydney last Saturday.
RDN CEO Dr Ian Cameron said Dr Sandra and Dr Blackwood have each made a significant contribution to the rural community by providing high quality continuity of care.
Dr Sandra practices at the Russell Street Medical Centre and is a Visiting Medical Officer at Bathurst hospital. Dr Blackwood practices at Busby Medical Centre.
Both doctors have been involved in many facets of rural general practice, in particular GP training for medical students and registrars.
“It is rare for rural doctors to be formally recognised for the outstanding contributions they make to their communities and acknowledged for the work they do,” Dr Cameron said.
“This award provides a unique opportunity for the people of Bathurst to acknowledge the difference that Dr Sandra and Dr Blackwood make to the health and well-being of the community.”
The dinner presentation was attended by more than 300 guests, representing GPs from across rural, regional and remote NSW, the award recipients and their families.
