Attorney-General George Brandis will announce on Thursday afternoon that he has appointed his former Senate colleague to the $460,000-year-job on the federal tribunal.
Mr Humphries served as Liberal Senator for the ACT from 2003 until he was deposed in a bloody internal coup by former leader of the local party Zed Seselja in early 2013, with the split in the party caused by knifing still not healed.
Before entering the Senate, Mr Humphries had a stint as ACT Chief Minister and after holding the Attorney General's job in the Carnell government.
During his time in the upper house, the former lawyer became the first member of the Howard government to cross the floor over the issue of gay marriage for the ACT.
He rose to the position of Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Families, Housing and Human Services and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship
Mr Humphries has worked as a lobbyist and newspaper columnist since leaving the Senate and as Chair of the Anzac Centenary Public Fund Board.
He declined to comment when contacted by The Canberra Times on Thursday.
