SAM McCorkindale has been one of the leading players for the Sydney City in the 2014-15 GMP Ultimate Basketball League, but even the best efforts of the former Bathurst Goldminer might not be enough to earn the Cobras a finals berth this season.

So far this season the man behind many of the Goldminers’ victories in the Basketball NSW Youth League competition has scored an average of 15 points per game for the Cobras and pulls down just shy of 10 boards each match.
To pull off almost a double-double (double figures in points and rebounds) average shows how important the centre is to the Cobras.
On Saturday night McCorkindale inspired the Sydney City Cobras to a last-quarter resurgence against the Australian Chinese Basketball Association Dragons.
His side won that final period by eight points which was enough to hand them a 91-89 win over the Dragons.
The result has the Cobras in sixth place on the ladder, but they only trail the third- placed Dragons by three points.
It means they are a chance of making the play-offs, yet the tightly packed nature of the ladder also means the Cobras will face some stiff competition over the remaining rounds of the regular season.
Still, with McCorkindale’s sort of form, the Cobras can certainly be considered a threat. After scoring 26 points and pulling down 15 rebounds against the Dragons on September 20 in his Cobras’ season opener, McCorkindale gave them another headache on Saturday night.
The towering centre finished with 19 points and seven boards, his final basket with 22 seconds left on the clock handing his side the narrow win.
His final quarter was yet another impressive effort in an already stellar season.
Injected into the game for the concluding 10 minutes after sitting out the final moments of the third period, he pulled down one offensive board, had one assist and a steal, potted a field goal as well as landing a pair of baskets from the free throw line.
After his late basket, McCorkindale and his team-mates were relieved as two three-point attempts from the Dragons missed the mark.
McCorkindale has scored 185 points and grabbed 116 boards in his 11 UBL games this season.
The season breaks for the Christmas/New Year holidays after next week’s round of game and will re-commence in January.
