The release of these results marks a single point in time that seeks to crystallise more than a decade of learning which, of course, is a ridiculous proposition.
As happens every year, then, it is worth taking a moment to step back and think about exactly what the results mean.
For many, they will mean entry to their chosen university course and a deep sigh of relief.
For many, they will mean time to reconsider the next 12 months and taking a new path to their chosen profession.
And, for some, they will mean nothing at all.
For no one, though, will they mean the end of their hopes and dreams. And that is worth remembering.
So if you get the results you hoped for this week, take the time to celebrate.
And if you don’t, take the time to be disappointed.
But, regardless of the numbers on your HSC and ATAR, always remember that these exams are neither an end nor a beginning.
They are simply another step along life’s long journey, a journey that will always feature ups and downs, wins and losses, celebrations and disappointments.
The focus on your HSC over the past 12 months may have convinced you there was nothing more in life, but that is far from the reality.
Congratulations to all the class of 2014, you have come through the toughest year of your life so far.
And, hopefully, one day you will look back and realise it was also the most enjoyable.
