Jake Skaines, 23, was last seen at the Oberon Correctional Facility about 3pm on Wednesday.
He was reported missing to officers at Chifley Local Area Command who have conducted searches in the area.
Skaines is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 162cm tall, medium build and was last seen wearing prison greens.
He has tattoos on his left arm, including the word ‘Auzzie’, a star symbol and a Southern Cross.
Police are warning the public not to approach the man but to instead contact triple-0 immediately.
Wednesday's escape comes less than a fortnight after two prisoners were reported missing from Oberon jail on December 8.
The pair was on the run for less than 24 hours before being arrested in Goulburn.
At the time of their escape, a Corrective Services NSW spokesman would not confirm how the two men walked out of the prison but said the Shooters Hill facility has locked accommodation units and a high perimeter fence.
The spokesman told the Western Advocate security at the prison would be reviewed.
