Secretary of Greening Bathurst Hugh Gould said former councillor Jo (Josephine) Ross contributed significantly to the welfare of the city, especially during the years between 1992 and 1996 as a local government representative in Bathurst City Council.
Mr Gould said Jo Ross considered “green” issues as most significant, well before “green” became integral in our society.
She was also an outspoken advocate for women’s issues.
“Jo was also a most talented artist; among other achievements she won the Bathurst Art Prize for her work ‘50th Anniversary of Victory in the Pacific’,” Mr Gould said.
“Sadly, Jo passed away in 2006. It was her wish that her legacy might benefit the community of Bathurst.”
Mr Gould said the award, which is generously supported by Jo Ross’ family, is presented to individuals or organisations that have contributed significantly to the cause of environmental sustainability in the Bathurst Region.
The stature of the award has grown since first being presented in 2008, with such winners as Nevil Barlow, Boundary Road Reserve Landcare Group, Chris Marshall, Rahamim, John Fry, Ross Thompson, David Goldney and last year’s winner, Bathurst Independent Living Skills.
“It’s an acknowledgement of the work that mostly volunteers put into supporting environmental work in the region,” Mr Gould said.
Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Greening Bathurst website or by calling 0427 323 499. Closing date is Friday, January 16, 2015.
