Roz Townsend, a regular at the track who uses the spectacular location as part of her fitness regime, contacted the Western Advocate recently with her concerns.
She said the track was a wonderful asset for residents, but wanted to know if it was possible for council to supply some seats around the circuit.
“I know it would have to be carefully placed so as to avoid any problems with the racing cars, but many people would like to sit and enjoy the view or just have a rest on the way up,” she said.
“The idea came to me when I was up there with a friend and she was puffed. We thought a few seats to have a spell would be a good idea. People think there’s seats in the cages where the marshals work, but there isn’t.”
Roz said she tried to get up to Mount Panorama at least once a week to walk or cycle the venue.
“Getting tired isn’t an issue I have to worry about, but if I take friends up there who aren’t used to the climb, it becomes one.
“We often have to stop for a break. I’ve started using trekking poles because it makes it easier and works the arms as well as the legs on the tough sections.
“And there are lots and lots of people up there walking. Recently, at 6.30am, there were at least 10 cars parked at the bottom and another four or five people on pushbikes going around.”
Roz said there were still some dangerous sections for walkers where they couldn’t walk in the right direction to ensure traffic was coming at them from the front and not behind.
“Just opposite the Goldfields the verge is petitioned off, so you can’t walk there going down. The Cutting is also dangerous because the hoons are going much faster than they should, sometimes for lap after lap.
“There are also such beautiful views across the Skyline at the top of the Mount. Imagine how popular it would be if there was an art gallery and coffee shop up there. It would make the circuit far more usable apart from race days.”
