The Canberra Raiders young gun was named on the bench of the 20-man squad, which is decided by popular vote, and is set to take the field alongside Indigenous giants of the game Jonathon Thurston (North Queensland Cowboys), Greg Inglis (South Sydney Rabbitohs), Justin Hodges (Brisbane Broncos) and Greg Bird (Gold Coast Titans).
Thurston and Inglis finished as the most popular selections from a public vote of more than 15,000 fans, and were separated by just 33 votes when the polls closed.
Wighton however, was added to the side as one mentor Laurie Daley’s coach’s picks.
Indigenous mentor, and Raiders legend, Laurie Daley is a known fan of Wighton’s, who was hand selected by Daley along with South Sydney’s Kyle Turner and Gold Coast’s Kierron Moseley.
The 2015 fight for the Arthur Beetson trophy will be Wighton’s second appearance for the Indigenous All Stars, after making his debut in 2013.
“It is a wonderful squad and there is some incredible talent all the way through it,” Daley said.
“They will play some exciting football and that is exactly what the All Stars concept is known for.
“I’m really looking forward to bringing this side together and coaching some of the game’s best players and brightest talents.”
Wighton is expected to play in the centres when he takes the field, but his naming followed the revelation he could be the Raiders’ new permanent fullback after impressing in the custodian role at the back end of 2014 and a bumper pre-season so far, and coach Ricky Stuart said as much.
“I’ve been very impressed with the efforts of the players during the pre-season and by the way they have handled themselves,” Stuart said.
“There is plenty of competition for spots in 2015. The upcoming trials are an opportunity for several players to push forward their claims to be a part of the top 17 for round one.”
