ALMOST 400 students received an offer to study at Charles Sturt University Bathurst last night – and careers in paramedics, nursing, education and criminal justice are the most popular.

Main round offers from the Universities Admissions Centre were released last night, with 46,507 offers made by participating institutions – a decrease of 4307 on last year.
CSU Bathurst head of campus Col Sharp said the 384 offers for study in Bathurst were across a range of specialities, but top of the offers list were paramedics (265), nursing (154), criminal justice (143) and exercise sports science (125).
Education was also popular, with 166 offers made in total – 93 for early childhood and primary and 73 for K-12 teacher education.
Mr Sharp said the popular courses reflect regional NSW’s broader need for these professions.
“One of our strategies is to support the professions that are required by our regional areas,” he said.
This main round adds to the 1124 offers (586 through previous UAC rounds and 538 direct offers to students) already made for commencing students, and Mr Sharp said there was still time to apply for courses.
“There are additional rounds through UAC and people can apply direct to CSU. They still have time to apply for study this year,” he said.
“We would hope to be able to make more offers in later UAC rounds and to students who apply directly with us.”
At this stage Mr Sharp said these numbers represent offers only, not the actual number of students expected to take up study in 2015.
“Final numbers that actually attend or study on campus will depend on who takes up the offer,” he said.
Mr Sharp acknowledged talk of university reforms may have led to indecision among some prospective students, but he said the benefits of higher education far outweigh the costs.
“The overriding principle is the benefits across a lifetime outweigh many times over in terms of employment, salary levels and lifestyle outcomes,” he said.
“In general, the lifetime outcomes for people who go into further study are much.”
All up, there were 1216 undergraduate offers for study at CSU campuses in 2015. This is in addition to the 3478 students who have already received an on-campus offer and 6950 students who have received an offer to study via distance education.
