A different person might have given up on the plan to have a $2 coin minted for Bathurst’s bicentenary after receiving a knockback from The Mint at Canberra and another knockback – of sorts – from Bathurst mayor Gary Rush.
Cr Rush said, understandably, that he didn’t want to lobby the PM’s office to create the coin when council was, at the same time, lobbying to have Tony Abbott visit Bathurst for the bicentenary.
Cr Jennings has since enlisted the support of Labor’s Chris Bowen and Joel Fitzgibbon and, as revealed today, is also going to the federal treasurer Joe Hockey as he pushes to make his coin dream a reality.
So will Bathurst get its commemorative coin? The longer the year goes on, the more it seems unlikely.
But will Cr Jennings give up the fight? It would be worth having a $2 bet – or even a bit more – that he will do nothing of the sort.
