Scripture teacher Pastor Bob Smith visited a home for 430 children, taking with him messages and drawings from 160 Bathurst students.
These were received with great excitement by the Bangladeshi children, who immediately penned return messages, along with some lovely artwork, to every child who wrote from Bathurst.
One of many positive principles taught from the Bible in SRE relates to the understanding and acceptance of people who are different to us.
This exchange has given children in both Australia and Bangladesh a great practical experience of this principle.
Late last year, a celebration of SRE for teachers of Christian and other faiths was held at Parliament House in Sydney.
Besides the support of both major parties for SRE in NSW, it was also announced that Pastor Bob Smith was to receive an award for creativity and innovation in SRE.
The award will be presented to Pastor Bob, as he is affectionately known, by Bathurst MP Paul Toole at an SRE training day to be held at the Bathurst Baptist Church on February 4.
Around 50 SRE teachers, representing most Christian churches in Bathurst and surrounding areas, teach scripture classes to about 2000 children.
