Half way through today’s race we have seen eight safety car periods and a share of teams left packing things up early.
While there have been no serious accidents, perhaps the most dramatic moment came in the fifth hour of racing when Peter Fitzgerald copped a bump on The Chase and went skidding at high speed through the sand trap.
While he and his Audi were able to get back to the garage and continue the same stroke of luck couldn’t be shared by others.
Bathurst driver Brad Shiels has had his day cut short as his co-driver Andrew Macpherson clipped the inside of Forrests Elbow. Macpherson ended up taking both himself and fellow Porsche driver Michael Lyons out of the running with one of the harder collisions of the day so far.
Drivers have even taking to crashing under safety car conditions.
The latest safety car, initially deployed due to a Ford Focus’ crash at The Cutting, had to be kept out longer when the Class D Audi TT entry ran up the back of the Trofeo Motorsport Ferrari at Mcphillamy Park.
Out the front the pole-sitting Phoenix Racing Audi driven by Marco Mapelli has maintained the lead.
The Craft Bamboo Racing Aston Martin has made its way up to second thanks to Alex MacDowall and Erebus Motorsport are well in the hunt for their second 12 Hour win with Jack LeBrocq currently driving the Mercedes around in third.
