Councillor Bobby Bourke says he has seen plenty of evidence over the past several months to indicate that the trial of lined parking has been a failure.
Cr Bourke said along George Street it is rare to see a car parked successfully between the newly added lines, and the situation isn’t much better in front of the RSL.
Cr Bourke said many people, elderly citizens in particular, struggle with the 45 degree angle.
“Some people will be able to do it and some people won’t,” he said.
Cr Bourke said he is disgusted by how the stark white lines have made the streetscape of Bathurst look.
“Bathurst is known to have great, open wide streets and the lines have ruined that image,” he said. “They take away from our great heritage streetscape.”
At the end of the day, whether people can park within the lines or not, the lined parking is just Bathurst Regional Council’s “Band-Aid solution” to a much bigger problem, according to Cr Bourke.
He said adding lines to define spaces is not solving Bathurst’s parking problems.
He would like to see a free, all-day car park placed in the CBD, and thinks the car park behind the RSL needs to be expanded.
“It needs to be a double-storey car park,” he said.
Cr Bourke intends to raise the idea of removing the lines with council.
“When it comes on the agenda with council after the trial, I will certainly be speaking against it and raising these issues,” he said.
