The 19-year-old woman was sitting on the grass in Cook Park at around 4.45pm when a man attacked her, indecently assaulting her five times.
The woman eventually managed to get away from her attacker and report the incident at Orange police station a short time later.
Police conducted a foot patrol of the area and interviewed several people who were in the park at the time of the incident, however they were unable to find the man.
Orange detectives continued to investigate the incident on Sunday and thanks to the victim’s detailed description of the 51-year-old man police were able to identify him.
He was arrested when he turned himself in to Orange police station at around 4.30pm on Sunday.
Canobolas Local Area Command duty officer Dave Harvey said while the woman was “shaken and distressed” as a result of the incident she was not physically injured.
“The woman acted quickly and reported the incident to police,” Inspector Harvey said.
“She was also able to give a description of the man and good police work helped track him down.”
Inspector Harvey said police believed the attack was random and there were no warnings for women to be extra cautious in the park.
“This [arrest] was a good result in the end, both a good result for police and a good result for the general public,” he said.
The man was given strict bail conditions and is due to appear in Orange Local Court on March 2.
