Two-year-old Briannah Honeysett was taken to Bathurst Base Hospital by her mother, Renee Simpson, where she was treated for burns to both hands and the side of her leg after trying to get on the popular attraction about 4pm.

And it’s not the first time a toddler has been burned playing on this piece of equipment.

The Western Advocate reported 12 months ago that two-year-old Molly Connor received burns and blisters while playing on the roundabout at a birthday party.

Molly’s mother, Jenna Connor, called on Bathurst Regional Council to install more shade over the play equipment, but a council spokesman said existing budgets did not allow immediate action on the issue.

A year on, the roundabout remains unshaded, though a council spokesperson yesterday said it would be considered during the current round of budget discussions.

“Council is currently reviewing budgets for the next financial year and shade structures at all the parks will come under consideraiton,” the spokesperson said.

“It will be up to councillors to decide how these items are prioritised.”

Ms Simpson yesterday said she and her children had just arrived at the park on Wednesday afternoon when her two girls – Dakota, five, and Briannah, two – ran over to the nearby roundabout.

She said seconds later Dakota came back crying and saying it was hot, followed by Briannah, who was screaming hysterically.

Ms Simpson said she could see Briannah’s hands and legs were red raw so she took her to a nearby tap and started applying cold water.

After a couple of minutes Briannah had settled, but as soon as the tap was turned off, she started screaming again.

Ms Simpson said she took her children home and put them in a cold bath, and instantly saw blisters forming on Briannah’s hands.

“The blisters started coming everywhere and her skin was peeling off. I was worried and took her straight to hospital,” Ms Simpson said.

“They [hospital staff] took her in and we saw the doctor.

“He said she had second degree burns to her hands and her leg and the nurses had to dress the wounds.”

Ms Simpson said her daughter was a mess.

“Her left hand is covered in blisters, and on the right hand there are blisters all down one side,” she said. “Her leg all the way down to her ankle is red raw.”

Ms Simpson, who has since heard of other incidents at the roundabout, said she was angry it could happen.

“There should be signs up warning parents,” she said.

“There is a little girl who sat on it and burnt her bottom, so council knew about it and have done nothing. 

“I assumed in a children’s playground the equipment would be safe.

“It definitely needs signs warning parents and children it can be hot, or there should be a shade cloth put over it, like the slippery dip. It’s scary to think Briannah has been so badly hurt.

“I believe council are negligent, especially the fact that it has happened before and nothing has been done to fix it up.”

Thankfully, Briannah has had the burns treated and is feeling much better, although Ms Simpson said she looks like a little mummy all bandaged up.

“They are special bandages that we have to keep wet and we go back to hospital on Saturday to have them redressed,” she said.

“But the situation is very bad and I’m angry it can happen. Council need to fix the problem and, until then, I just want to warn other parents.

“I don’t want this happening to anyone else’s child.”
