St Patrick’s proved that their win over second-placed St Pius X was no fluke as they bowled the visitors all out in their chase of 146 with more than 10 overs still to spare.
Stannies can put down the loss to their failure to remove one player.
The damage could have been limited by Stannies had they removed Pat’s wicketkeeper Sam Cividin before letting him reach his total of 77 runs.
Cividin’s knock from fourth in the order proved the difference, making more than half of Pat’s runs.
So significant was his impact that the next biggest contributor to the Pat’s total was the Stannies’ sundries count at 19.
Stannies couldn’t have asked for much of a better start after quickly putting the home side at 3-5 on the back of two Daniel Donato wickets and one from Jack Veitch.
Harry Menenti (15) combined with Cividin to get Pat’s back on track.
In reply Stannies kept making small partnerships before Brad Glasson (27) and Jacob Tuxford (21) combined for a 40-run stand for the fourth wicket.
That took Stannies from 41 to 81 and put them in the box seat but it wasn’t a position they could maintain, losing their last five wickets for 25 runs.
Daniel Donato top scored with 29.
“We bowled really well but we just couldn’t get Sam Cividin, their keeper-batsman, out. Before this he hadn’t scored a lot this season. We did drop a few catches but they certainly weren’t easy chances,” Stannies coach Tony Fisher said.
“There was a contentious moment where Brad Glasson looked to be caught at slip but Brad stood his ground, he didn’t think it was out. After the umpire talked to the square leg umpire and the Pat’s players said they thought he might not have caught it, which was sporting of them, he stayed in. A couple of overs later there was a dubious LBW decision ... but these things happen.
“It was good to see Daniel Donato back bowling quick, along with Jack Veitch as the opening pair. A few bowlers learnt a lesson though about bowling short.”
Stannies were without Luke Powell for much of their innings in the field, with a groin strain limiting the bowler to just a single over and ruling him out of the batting line-up.
Thanks to Pius’ defeat last week, Stannies retain their spot on top of the ISA ladder by a single point.
The two sides now face off in next week’s meeting at St Stanislaus’ with the first place spot on the line.
“Pat’s was a wake-up call for us. I was saying to the boys on the trip back home that this is the start of our finals campaign now against Pius this weekend, not with the semi-finals but now with this last round,” Fisher said.
All Saints’ College didn’t take to the field against Blue Mountains Grammar after their match was abandoned due to bad weather.
