Contractors have been carrying out the work at the intersections of William and Russell streets, Russell and Havannah streets, Rocket and William streets and Howick and Hope streets.
Engineering director Doug Patterson said funding for the jobs would come from council’s annual $1 million urban and rural resealing budget.
He said summer was the ideal time for the work.
“An annual resealing program is carried out in the summer months with multiple roads done at the same time to make the most of optimum weather conditions for this work,” he said.
“Some of these [current] resurfacing jobs are done with the higher grade asphalt which is determined by the type of intersection and traffic movements.”
Mr Patterson said council’s assets management team use a sophisticated software program and regular road inspections to identify areas requiring work.
“A condition and rating is applied during these inspections and logged in our asset register,” he said. “On average, our asphalt roads are resealed every 15 to 18 years, with urban reseals every 12 years and rural reseals every 15 years.
“[However], priorities can change if major issues arise in certain areas. Bitumen oxidises and cracks with age and wear and potholes are created when water gets in under these cracks and deteriorates the surface.”
Mr Patterson said members of the public can also contact council if they come across a deteriorating section of road.
Concerned residents should phone 6333 6111 or email council@bathurst.nsw.gov.au to have their request logged.
