Deep tyres tracks – likely to have been caused by a four-wheel drive – have left the track on River Road unusable, and not for the first time.
Bathurst BMX Club secretary and life member, Councillor Greg Westman yesterday said the track had been vandalised on at least a dozen occasions.
Club officials have reported each incident to police but no charges have been laid.
“Quite often we have 4WDs coming on the track when it is not a 4WD track at all,” Cr Westman said. “It is almost a weekly occurrence.”
The damage done to the track varies depending on the size of the 4WD and whether the surface is wet or dry.
It is the responsibility of the BMX Club to maintain the track, but doing so has become costly of late as volunteers have needed to rent equipment to repair the track surface.
“We’ve spent over $5000 in the last six to eight weeks to fix up the track,” Cr Westman said.
With this latest incident coming the day before a race, the club is frantically trying to restore the track.
“[The damage] makes it unusable,” Cr Westman said.
“We can’t let it be used for any events or training until it passes a track inspection.”
As the area is not fenced, it is easy for members of the public to access the track.
But Cr Westman is asking people to be mindful that the track is not there for 4WDs to use and to note that any time someone takes advantage of the facility the cost of repairs has to be met by the club.
“It is very disappointing to see the club’s hard work that they’ve put into maintaining the track go to waste,” he said. “[Drivers’] actions have made it an unsafe track.”
