Porters Cafe owner Chris Bergen says his shop has fallen victim to countless smashed windows in his 12 years of business.

The latest attack was discovered when he arrived at his cafe to open for business on Saturday morning.

Mr Bergen found the cafe’s door destroyed, in what he says is the second smashed window in the last eight months.

“This time it’s the door, we haven’t had the door broken before ... it’s low down, so maybe someone’s kicked it in,” he said.

“It happens all the time, that’s the second time in eight months ... it’s something you just get sick of. It’s very disheartening, you walk in and think ‘oh god it’s happened again’.”

Mr Bergen has now called on Bathurst Regional Council to pay for in full, or at least contribute to, the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) across the city’s CBD.

Mr Bergen is joined by three other Bathurst business owners who have also had their front windows smashed over the last month.

Harmonikos Music store on Bentinck Street had its windows broken on two consecutive nights in February, while Bathurst Travel Centre and Kelly and Partners Chartered Accountants were earlier this month.

His call for action comes with considerable research into the effectiveness of CCTV in international studies.

From his research, Mr Bergen believes residents in a city the size of Bathurst are more aware of the “consequences” of their actions, as opposed to a metropolitan city like Sydney, and this is why CCTV will work.

“For me it really comes down to a society where people should be held responsible for their own actions,” he said.

Mr Bergen claims it is council that is responsible for the street, not him or his landlord, and as such it should ensure the risk of malicious damage attacks to businesses are reduced.

“Council should certainly contribute, if not pay for the whole thing [installation of CCTV],” he said.

Chifley local area command sergeant Alan Beattie said the malicious damage attack at Porters Cafe was reported via the Police Assistance Line.

“Investigations are continuing, however it appears there is no CCTV [of the shop front] available,” he said.
