Penrith Panthers players stayed in Bathurst after their game on Saturday to take part in yesterday’s event.
Children between the ages of five and 12 were able to have a bit of a kick around with their favourite players, including Jamal Idris, Matt Moylan and Tyrone Peachey.
By attending the clinic they were able to develop their skills in passing, catching, kicking and tackling, which will help them on the road to becoming better rugby league players.
Following the hands-on action of the clinic, the youngsters and other members of the community were able to have an open meet and greet with some of the players and their coach, Ivan Cleary.
All were happy to sign posters, footballs, drink bottles, shoe and even heads that were offered to them by the kids.
They also posed for plenty of photos.
Panthers’ five-eighth and halfback Jamie Soward was one of the major drawcards at the clinic.
He reflected on his time as a youngster attending similar events and said he could understand why it got the kids so excited.
“I think it’s a big thrill for the kids [to meet the players],” he said.
Soward was flattered to see so many of the youngsters wearing Panthers paraphernalia to the clinic, and even enjoyed seeing those who were showing their love for a different team.
“When you come to a country town like this it’s nice to have the support,” he said.
“It’s nice to be able to see the kids in their rugby league jumpers.”
When asked if he thought some of the junior players could take his job in a few years, Soward laughed but acknowledged some of the kids were pretty good with the ball.
However, the clinic wasn’t all about improving football skills.
“The main thing when you come to these clinics is to have fun,” Soward said.
The Penrith Panthers are back at home today, preparing for their next match against the Sydney Roosters at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 23.
