THE Combined Catholic Colleges side has taken out the NSW Schoolgirls Cricket Championships in dramatic fashion after a heart-stopping tie with the Combined High Schools 1 team at Morse Park 1 on Tuesday.

In a remarkable finish to the game, CHS, who went into the game as heavy favourites, needed seven runs to win from the final over with a solitary wicket in hand.

Under competition rules, a tie would see whichever team had lost the least wickets awarded the trophy.

Earlier CCC had finished with 9-151 from their 50 overs.

Ash Day and Tilly Lugg had come together for CHS 1 with their team looking down and out at 9-125 but had put on a 20-run stand when the last over, bowled by Claire Lennon, began.

After taking three from the opening two deliveries, Lugg absorbed a couple of dot balls before hitting the penultimate delivery for two, leaving her side needing one to tie or two to win.

They completed a single easily enough but attempting the winning run, Day was run out for a gutsy 20 while Lugg finished unbeaten on 10.

Had they settled for the single, the overall win may have been shared but there was no way either player could have known the by-law surrounding wickets lost.

"That was a wonderful game of cricket, and a very nerve-racking one," CCC coach Luke Morrissey said afterwards.

"It is the first time in 13 years that CCC have won this competition, and to be honest I thought we'd blown it.

"We had a heap of run-out chances, a dropped catch during that last partnership but we just managed to scrape across the line.

"They [CHS 1] were a very strong side. Every girl in that team is in a NSW representative at some level and they were definitely favoured to win."

Earlier, having qualified second for the final after the three Twenty20 matches on day one, CCC batted first and made a competitive total without it being a truly daunting one.

Kayla Austin and Sam Arnold controlled their innings with a good 30 each in the CCC middle-order to get their side on the path to a defendable score, while Alisha Phoonie (2-20 off eight) was the best of the CHS 1 bowlers.

The favourites' fielding was exemplary, earning four run-outs during the course of the innings.

The start of their run-chase wasn't as effective, however, as openers Kirsten Smith and Jessica Marks each fell without scoring.

Cowra's Amy Edgar (25) got things up and running and there were also good contributions from Carly Leeson (31) and Rachael Trenamen (24) to get CHS 1 to 5-103.

However, a collapse of 4-22 tilted the game decidedly back in CCC's favour, and despite the heroic effort from the last CHS 1 pair to level the scores, CCC deserve their trophy.

Prue Roebuck starred with the ball for CCC, taking 4-32, while Clara Iemma also took a couple of wickets and supplied the decisive run-out on the final ball.
