A popular local attraction, the Victors’ Walk, which is outside the council chambers, bears plaques celebrating the winners of the major races in Bathurst of the past 50 years.
Mayor Gary Rush said Bathurst Regional Council decided the area needed to be improved so the tradition of laying plaques could continue unhindered.
“The challenge was how we were going to keep it going for the next 50 years,” he said.
The decision was made to relay the entire area instead of just a small portion.
“The footpath, whilst it was in good condition, we just found it easier to dig it all up,” Cr Rush added.
So far, the original 20 metre long black and white checked footpath has been dug up and council staff are laying the grid before concreting begins.
The work is expected to be complete by mid-April.
During this time, pedestrians will be slightly inconvenienced when using the Russell Street footpath, but measures have been taken to ensure there is a safe area in place to accommodate foot traffic.
Cr Rush said that once the works are complete the Victors’ Walk will continue to be a well-presented local attraction that only adds to the significance of Bathurst in its bicentenary year.
“It is an area of Bathurst that attracts a lot of attention from tourists,” he said.
“To have it always presented at its best is a good project for council to undertake.”
