WHEN Read About Lexy missed out on qualifying for the final of the 2014 Gold Tiara, trainer-driver Bernie Hewitt was a disappointed man given the high hopes he had held for his filly.

But this year Hewitt was anything but disappointed with Read About Lexy on the Gold Crown Carnival’s finals night as she showed exactly what she is capable of when winning the $40,000 Group 3 Gold Bracelet.
Not only did she pick up the third Group win of her career on Saturday night, adding to the Raith Memorial victory from January and last year’s two-year-old Breeders Challenge success, she displayed a load of heart in doing so.
Into the final bend of the 2,260 metre final for three-year-old fillies at the Bathurst Paceway, Read About Lexy trailed $1.90 favourite, last year’s Gold Tiara winner Makes Every Scents, by more than a length. But Hewitt’s Sportswriter x Lexys Laughing filly dug deep and charged down the home straight to beat home the Luke McCarthy driven favourite by 51⁄4m.
Highlighting the dominance of that pair, third placed Somelovesomewhere ($59.70) was a further 101⁄4m back.
“It looked like it was going to be a bit that way [two-horse race], but obviously there were plenty of other runners there who could have come into it with the right trip. But it ended up that way, a two-horse run,” Hewitt said.
“I was surprised when I had a little look back on the bend and saw we had dropped the rest of the field off.
“At that stage Luke had pinched nearly half a length on me with the speed down the back. But we had the inside run around the bend and she gathered her own momentum and stuck to her task right to the line and beyond.”
Drawing barrier one for the Gold Bracelet Final certainly came as a boost for Hewitt, and punters liked what they saw as well as they backed Read About Lexy into $3.90 second favourite.
The Georges Plains filly showed enough gate speed from that draw to hold out Makes Every Scents on her immediate inside and Somelovesomewhere, who had flown away from barrier six once the green light was given.
Scarlet Satene then galloped behind the leader to end her chances, but after briefly heading three wide, Makes Every Scents moved up to sit outside Read About Lexy to have the two favourites at the head of the field.
On the bell it was Ready About Lexy by three-quarters of a length over Makes Every Scents and with Hewitt’s filly putting her foot down over the back straight, those two gapped the chasing pack.
Read About Lexy covered the third quarter of the mile in 27.8 seconds to put two lengths on all but one of her rivals – the favourite – who then took over in the lead.
Into the straight Read About Lexy mounted another challenge and with Somelovesomewhere 21⁄2 lengths back in third, it was clear Hewitt’s runner was the only member of the field who could deny Makes Every Scents the Gold Tiara-Gold Bracelet double.
That she did, Read About Lexy kicking clear to take the spoils in a 1:56.5 mile rate. It was the first time Hewitt had claimed one of the Gold Crown Carnival’s major trophies.
“She showed a tremendous amount of will to win there and it’s a bit of a trademark of hers now. She is not only quick off the back of them, but she can also do a fair bit of work on the run,” Hewitt said.
“I just wasn’t sure if we could rally back through under her [Makes Every Scents] and get back in front, but I knew one thing for sure – she’d try all the way to the wire.
“She got back through in front and actually drew away in that last 150 metres, so it was a big thrill.”
The win was the 10th of Read About Lexy’s 21-start career that has also included nine placings and seen her earn more than $140,000.
