The medal will recognise the significant contribution of an individual to enhancing the value of Australia’s heritage, with the winner to receive $25,000 in cash along with the medal and commemorative pin.
Mayor Gary Rush said council wanted to use the bicentenary to make a significant statement about the value of preserving and promoting our national heritage.
“Council felt compelled to create an award that recognises the protection, enhancement and promotion of Australia’s heritage and helps raise awareness about the immense value in celebrating and acknowledging the people, places and events that have shaped us today,” Cr Rush said.
“Through rewarding an individual who has shown leadership and innovation through professional or personal achievements in development of cultural, built, natural or social heritage, we aim to draw national attention to these stories and make lasting links that celebrate the stories that bring us together.”
A panel of judges, including leaders from the Australian Institute of Architects, the National Trust, Museums Australia and Universities Australia, met in Sydney recently to assess nominations for the award, which have come in from across Australia.
The Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Medal will be presented in Bathurst on Thursday, May 7 at a dinner being held during the city’s Bathurst200 Heritage Week. It will go to someone who has:
* Demonstrated commitment to protecting, promoting or enhancing the value of Australia’s heritage.
* Made a lasting contribution to Australia’s natural, built, social and/or cultural heritage.
* Positively influenced the real and perceived value of Australia’s heritage on a national or international level.
The winner will be decided on the basis of the candidate’s significant, fundamental contributions to the protection, promotion or enhancement of Australia’s natural, built, social or cultural heritage; the lasting impact and positive influence of these contributions to Australia’s heritage; and the expressed intent to continue to protect, promote or enhance Australia’s heritage.
