For the first time in years, he was reunited with his father.
Michael is a Vietnam veteran who served as part of the 7th RAR after leaving Bathurst at the age of 16 to train in Melbourne.
His father, Ronald Barrott, fought in New Guinea during World War 2.
Being reunited on Anzac Day made the experience even more significant for the two veterans.
Michael was pleased with the way Bathurst paid tribute during its11am service, and liked the incorporation of the knitted poppies throughout Kings Parade.
“The way it was all presented was just amazing,” he said.
His father was also impressed by the commemoration and was keen to be there, despite now needing the assistance of walker to get around.
However, Ronald still lives in his own house in Bathurst with his wife and doesn’t let age or capability prevent him from being part of Anzac Day.
Michael said it was great to be reunited with his father at the service and to hear the stories that are so rarely told by people who fought in wars.
“You don’t really get to hear true stories from the veterans,” he said.
