PETER Munday might be a new kid on the block when it comes to showing Belted Galloways, but he’s certainly kicked off his campaign in fine style.

Although he’s only just started a small operation at his fledgling 7 Hills Stud at Caloola, Mr Munday was triumphant in his section at this year’s Royal Bathurst Show.
In fact, he beat some pretty hot opposition to take out the prestigious titles of grand champion male and female and supreme grand champion bull.
Along the way he toppled entries who went into the competition with wins behind them at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and Royal Canberra Show.
Although Mr Munday now knows he could have a bright future in the cattle industry, he is humble about his success and says he won’t be giving up his day job in town with agricultural supplies company Silmac just yet.
“The property was purchased about a year ago. It’s 220 acres at Caloola,” Mr Munday said.
“Before that I lived with my parents at their property on the Bridle Track at Duramana.
“I went for the Belties [Belted Galloways] because when I started out at Mum and Dad’s it was a lot rougher country out there and they were suited to those conditions.
“I wanted a breed that would do well on hilly country and native pastures and the Belties are suited to this because of their Scottish background.”
Mr Munday said he bought his stock from all over Australia and now takes pride in his herd of about 30 females, 12 of which are stud quality.
“They came from all over, to be honest – from Adelaide, Victoria and some from NSW,” he said. “I got three from Johnno Seaman from Sid Newham Rural Supplies, who has Belties out at Perthville, including the heifer that won grand champion female.
“The winning bull came from Joe Tobin’s place at Meadow Flat. Now I’ve got calves on the ground to that bull. There’s also some commercial cows with calves and heifers in calf to him.”
Mr Munday said his big wins in Bathurst would hopefully act as a springboard for his stud.
“I’m certainly keen to hear from anyone interested in purchasing some award-winning Belties,” he said. “They have a great temperament and are really quiet.”
