That is the confronting text sent by Bathurst man Andrew Soames during what should have been a fun family holiday in Nepal.

For the Soames family, a three-week holiday soon turned into a nightmare when a massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday.

Tanya and Andrew Soames, along with their four children, Ben, 14, Jaxon, 12, Blade, 9, and Indyanna, 7, were nearing the end of their holiday in Pohkara when the ground started shaking.

Andrew’s brother Brett Soames, who was back home in Bathurst, was the first person Andrew contacted just 30 minutes after the quake.

“He wanted to know details about the airport, infrastructure and food,” Brett said.

Brett couldn’t even find a mention of the ’quake when he took to Google as it has only just happened. Since then Andrew has kept his family in Bathurst updated through phone calls and texts.

“Things are getting a little more tense here on the ground, but we’re ok. Food is running out,” Andrew posted in one text.

Not only were the family holidaying and visiting friends in Nepal, but they were also volunteering at a Jehovah’s Witnesses mission.

“They were in one of our halls when it hit and [luckily] it was quite well built,” Brett said.

Andrew and his family were uninjured in the ’quake and Brett said his brother took the disaster in his stride.

“He’s a seasoned traveller, he just wanted information,” Brett said. “They’ve travelled right through Africa with an eight-month-old and they’ve travelled in South America.”

Brett said Andrew’s primary concern was that the family make it onto their scheduled flight out of Nepal as planned.

Since Andrew’s initial contact with Brett Nepal has been rocked by a series of powerful aftershocks, rain storms and a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest which have so far left more than 5000 people dead.

A huge aftershock measuring 6.7 magnitude, centred east of Kathmandu, struck just a day after the original quake.

The family was due to arrive back into Sydney last night and will then make their way back to Bathurst.
