ST Pat’s centre Bailey Waldron has been named in the Western Division under 18s representative side after he and his fellow Group 10 representatives went undefeated at the cluster carnival in Dubbo on Saturday.
Waldron was one of four Bathurst players who lined up for Group 10, with his Saints club-mate McCoy White on the bench while Bathurst Panthers were represented by starting second rower Jarrod Seager and Jye Barrow.
It is not the first time Waldron has been selected in a representative outfit, having toured Papua New Guinea in 2013 as a member of the NSW Rugby League Academy Young Achievers squad.
The Nick Lander coached Group 10 outfit opened their campaign with a 34-6 win over Castlereagh, with Waldron amongst the try scorers, before going on to draw 10-all in the final with Group 11.
As Group 11 scored the first try in that contest, they were declared the winners of the under 18s division on a countback.
At the conclusion of the carnival the Western Rams side was named, Waldron having impressed enough to earn the number four jumper.
He was one of eight Group 10 players who made the team, which is to be coached by Cameron Greenhalgh.
Lander admitted the future of football in the Western region looked bright.
“When you look at it there’s a lot of talent and these boys can become really good first graders, while some have the potential to go on and play in Sydney if they put their mind to it,” he said.
Just as Group 10 opened the carnival with a win, so too did Group 11 as they posted a 42-6 victory over the President’s 13 team coached by Bathurst’s Kyle Myers.
It meant both Group 10 and Group 11 went into the final with confidence.
Approaching half-time it was Group 11 who opened scoring with a slick back line move resulting in Parkes winger Jesse Parker crossing.
It was all square again almost immediately as a Daniel Jeffries try was converted by Josh Rivett.
The second half saw a lift in intensity and both sides ran in another four pointer to make it 10-all, Group 11 declared the victors after a countback.
Lander was disappointed his side missed out, but with both teams playing quality football, he said it was hard to argue with the scoreline.
“I think it’s one that got away, but at the end of the day it’s a fitting result, we had lots of opportunities but couldn’t convert,” he said.
“I’m a bit disappointed, it was a good game and we needed to capitalise, but I think an exceptional Western Rams side will come out of this so best of luck to all of those selected.”
