WHEN most people hear the name Simon Osborne - a former Bathurst Panthers, Bathurst St Pat’s and Mudgee Dragons gun who virtually turned up to Orange CYMS training a week out from the season proper - they think enforcer.
The fact he’s one now equally adept in Mixed Martial Arts, the kind you see grounding and pounding in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, gives even more credence to the notion.
But Mick Sullivan sees something else in his new Group 10 and Western Division forward.
And he’s rapt he’s now donning green and gold.
“He’s enthusiasm has been infectious around the club,” Sullivan said.
“He’s fitted in really well, and the footy he’s been playing ... I don’t think anyone can argue with him being picked for Western.
“He’s been a really good addition to the club.”
Osborne has been named in the frontrow ahead of tomorrow’s top-of-the-able clash with this year’s surprise packets Blayney, a side that didn’t contest any grade in Group 10 last time he played in the competition in 2012.
There will be a couple of familiar faces though.
Members of the same Bathurst Panthers side Osborne played in back in 2005, Steve Lane and William Kennedy have bolted the Bears to a 4-1 record in 2015, and with a pack to match any in Group 10 this season, Blayney will provide CYMS with its toughest test of the season to date.
“I heard Bubba and Laney are going really well,” Osborne said.
“I played with them at Panthers, so I know what they’re like, and Bubba’s still killing it apparently.”
Osborne added Group 10 has changed slightly in the time he was at Penrith club Brothers - netting a premiership in 2014.
“It’s good, it’s a lot different ... a lot faster and a lot more controlled compared to back in the day when swinging arms were allowed,” he laughed.
“It’s been really good though, I’m enjoying it.”
Tomorrow’s clash kicks off at 3pm, with an Old Boys game between CYMS and the grizzly Bears to be played at 2.30pm at Wade Park.
