When it comes to parking in the city, most people have an opinion on how to make it better.
Bathurst Regional Council is aware of this and is extending the trial of 45 degree lines marked on the roadway on the George Street side of Machattie Park, between Russell and Keppel streets.
However, many motorists seem to struggle to get used to parking at this angle because they are used to parking closer to 30 degrees.
The good thing about the trial is that the uniform angle means you can generally fit more cars along that section of roadway in the central business district.
Cr Aubin, who is a member of council’s traffic committee, has always been one to have his say on issues, even if it is controversial.
On this occasion he is advocating that council look into the pros and cons of nose-in parking and intends raising the issue with his colleagues.
Yes, you heard it right. Nose-in parking.
It’s been working well in other major regional locations such as Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Albury, so Cr Aubin wants to know – why not in Bathurst as well?
“The other councillors might want to run me out of town, but then again they might not,” Cr Aubin said. “It’s certainly something worth looking at. It has a lot of positives.”
Love it or hate it, Cr Aubin’s idea has merit.
It would mean traffic would flow better because there wouldn’t be cars backed up the block while they wait for the motorist in front to stop and reverse into the parking spot.
It would also save the poles that hold up the first floor verandahs in the CBD from copping a battering from reversing cars. There would also be no exhaust fumes for pedestrians on the footpath with nose-in parking.
Over to you, Cr Aubin.
