GRACE Schumacher and Samantha Burrow headlined a list of strong results for local players in the Tennis Australia bronze level event at the Bathurst Tennis Centre on Monday as both girls reached the deciders of their respective divisions
The Bathurst hosted combined Australian Money Tournament and junior tour event ran from Friday through to Monday and brought several of Australia’s top 100-ranked players to the city.
In the battle between the top two seeds in the under 14s girls final, Patricia Apisah downed top-ranked Schumacher 7-5, 6-4.
Burrow and partner Nicci Vesely were the second seeds for the under 14s doubles and while they managed to reach the final, went down to number four seeds Maiki Sun and Lia Woods 6-3, 6-1.
Max Purcell lived up to his number one seeding in the men’s open Australian Money Tournament final as he defeated Brian Tran 6-3, 2-0, Tran retiring due to muscle cramps.
In the open women’s division, Apisah’s older sister Violet dominated to beat Brooke Winley 6-0, 6-2 in the final.
Bathurst Tennis Centre’s Andrew Mitton said in the midst of some amazing talent, Bathurst players did manage to impress.
“Patricia is a very solid player. Her and Grace are very close in ability and there’s not much difference between them in their ranking,” he said.
“Sam Burrow in the final of the doubles is a very good achievement for her. We had a fair share of Bathurst success with Josh Wong and Tayla Brasier winning their first round matches as well as Charlotte Mcdonell winning a match in her under 10s competition.
“Alex and Gabby Mitton won rounds in the AMT [Australian Money Tournament] draw with Alex winning two and Gabby one. It goes to show that we have the players here in Bathurst to compete on a high level.”
Schumacher also tested herself in the open age group, with her run coming to an end on Saturday at the hands of second seed Winley.
The Eglinton junior went down fighting in their quarter-final, defeated 7-5, 7-6.
Her run in the under 14s earlier in the day was impressive.
After receiving a bye through to the second round as the number one seed, Schumacher won her first match 6-0, 6-0.
After being pushed to a 7-5 first set in her next match, Schumacher prevailed again before dropping only three games in a comfortable win over sixth seed Ashleigh Simes.
In the semi-final Schumacher met number three seed Matina Udjur, but she was a class above as she lost just three games on her way to the final.
