Goalkeepers often have their magic moments – but they don’t normally happen in front of the opposition’s goal.
That became a reality on Sunday when regular CSU goalkeeper Pat Hogan delivered not one, but two goals for his Stags side.
Hogan’s double helped his side claim a 5-1 win over Cowra Eagles in the Bathurst District Football Association’s first grade men’s competition.
The goals, the last of the match, came in the space of just three minutes and led to a huge round of celebrations from the students – both on and off the field.
Given a rare opportunity to show his skills at the other end of the turf, Hogan didn’t disappoint.
He went very close 15 minutes into the second half when a nicely curled free kick required a good save from the Eagles goalkeeper.
He wasn’t going to be denied however, as with just under 20 minutes to play he got on the end of a well-placed through ball to finish in the bottom left corner.
Still on a high from his first goal for the side, Hogan leapt up to send a well directed header to the same spot just moments later.
“Pat’s our full-time goalkeeper and very good at it. We figured if we could get a few goals up today we’d get him out on the field to save him the ‘nudie’ run at the end of the year. He’s actually come out and scored two, so he’s leapfrogged some of the other players who are in the forwards,” CSU coach Brett Russell said.
“He didn’t get any time on the field last year, so he was happy to get some today. Who knows? It might happen again now if he keeps showing that sort of form.”
CSU were in control early on and found two goals in the opening half.
The Stags continued their dominance following the break, rarely allowing the Eagles any time in the CSU half.
At 10 minutes into the second half CSU went very close when a header off a free kick skimmed across the top of the crossbar.
After a rare opportunity in front of goal for the Eagles, the Stags immediately took the ball back up the other end, finding the back of the net and with it a 3-0 lead.
Cowra had to resort to longer balls down the field at times as they struggled to put together more than three or four passes in possession.
Some nice play down the left wing did give them a sniff of a comeback when Will Bateman finished from close range at the left post.
The CSU response was swift and it came from the unexpected – Hogan’s boot and head in quick succession.
“The boys have been playing well all season. We’re playing good possession football. We’re just having some trouble finishing, so it was good to see them get five today,” Russell said.
“We had a few absent today so we had a few second graders who stepped up well to fill in.”
