The pair, among the strongest junior prospects in Bathurst swimming, were wasting no time showing the rest of the Central West what they were capable of in the water at the weekend’s Mountains and Plains Winter Championships at the Bathurst Aquatic Centre.
The short course meeting was the final opportunity for some of the Bathurst City Amateur Swim Club members to qualify for the upcoming NSW Country meeting.
Both Geyer, 15, and Lyons, 10, were already bound for the Country meet but were busy trying to either qualify for more events or set themselves new personal bests.
Geyer said the work load hasn’t eased up just because winter had rolled around.
“We’ve been doing some hard work at training but had a easier week leading up to the carnival,” he said.
“I’ll be doing all the breaststroke there at Country, the 100m and 200m, and a couple of other events that I’m hoping to qualify for today. I’ve always enjoyed doing breaststroke.
“I’ve started to get my times down a bit. I did a 32 [seconds] for the 50m breaststroke and a two minutes, 31 seconds for the 200m. Hopefully I can get to under 30 for my breaststroke and under 2:30 for the 200m.
“I’ve qualified for state and I’m hoping to get into the top 10 at nationals. That would be awesome.”
Geyer’s time in the 200m breaststroke was good enough for a second place on Saturday.
In the 100m he went one spot better to improve upon his entry time by 0.44 seconds with a 1:11.62.
Doing so, Geyer picked up his single overall victory from the meeting to go with seven other top three finishes.
His haul of 141 points also topped the list for the home club.
Lyons showed her dominance in her age group by picking up five golds.
Her biggest time improvement came in the short course-specific 100m individual medley, knocking almost seven seconds off with a 1:22.87.
The other four wins came in the 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 200m freestyle relay and 50m freestyle.
Lyons snared a second in the very competitive 100m freestyle.
