Writer Clementine Ford appeared on Channel Ten's The Project on Thursday and delivered a resounding message to the women of Australia: it's okay to name your abusers.

The Daily Life columnist was last week besieged with threats of rape and violence after she spoke out about breakfast program Sunrise's attitude toward victims of nude photo hackings.

Ford shared a semi nude photo of herself with "Hey #Sunrise get f***ed" written across her chest after Sunrise's Facebook page asked when women would get the message not to take nude photos.

The writer shared the online responses from men threatening her with physical and sexual violence, but in a stunning sequence of events, she was banned from Facebook for violating community standards.

"The reason that I did it is because I don't really see there's any appropriate mechanisms, particularly on Facebook, to deal with these kinds of things," Ford told The Project panel on Thursday night.

"People generally in society say to women these are the kinds of attitudes we need to ignore. That if women want to put themselves out in the public sphere, then we need to expect this kind of backlash will happen."

The writer said she had been contacted by schoolgirls and other women who had been subject to similar abuse but were afraid to speak out.

"The reason why I've chosen to speak out and name and shame perpetrators is not because their messages personally upset me, it's because I know we live in a culture where women feel scared to speak out about these things because of what will happen to them."

"I want to show them that actually what happens is people rally behind you and they offer you support and that makes you stronger."

Ford said women needed to stand together and highlight online abuse.

"The power comes from women standing up together and saying 'this is the reality of what happens when we speak out'.
