IT may have taken a while for them to find top gear, but St Pat's still put on a dominant show in their 13-0 men's Premier League Hockey derby win over Bathurst City on Saturday.
Win number seven of the year for Pat's was their biggest to date, their creativity in attack and support play seeing them outclass the less experienced City outfit at Bob Roach Field.
Competition newcomers City knew they faced an almighty task against the Saints and things were made even tougher with just a single substitute to use. That was coach Kevin Sherman.
City did make an excellent account of themselves in the opening half, their desperate defence in the circle shutting down several dangerous runs from Pat's.
But once Pat's settled into the contest, the goals began to come at a regular intervals. The second half was particularly one-sided as the Saints netted nine times.
Pat's coach Ben Hurford felt the build up play was equally strong from his side in both halves, but in the second his men better capitalised on their chances.
"I think our build up play in the first half was very good. The way we passed the ball around was good, but we were just lacking that final touch in the circle. We probably could have scored a few more there in the first half," he said.
"The guys spoke before the game about the importance of playing out the full 70 minutes, to not take it easy at any point.
"I think the fitness showed and Tobbie [Muldoon] and Shane [Conroy] at the back controlled the pace with which we went forward, and chose their time well with when to go forward."
After a number of blown opportunities early on, Pat's eventually found their first goal in the eighth minute through Riley Hanrahan.
The second goal came minutes later when Josh Toole was left unmarked directly in front of goal for the easiest finish of the day.
City did rally after that and made life tougher for Pat's in their circle.
But that resistance faded and Jaden Ekert picked up the first of his four goals 10 minutes from the break.
Toole's second goal arrived before half-time as he converted from Pat's first penalty corner of the game.
In the second half the enthusiasm was quickly knocked out of the City unit.
Muldoon's drag flick off a penalty corner three minutes after play resumed pushed the score out to 5-0.
Five minutes later and Pat's had moved 7-0 ahead, Aiden Charters finding the mark as well as another Muldoon penalty corner flick.
Darcy Davis, Pete Cobcroft and even Conroy got themselves on the scoresheet for Pat's before Ekert's second goal with 10 minutes to go made it 11-0.
Jakob Hill had the best chance of the match to score for City when a mis-trap from Muldoon allowed him to get to the circle, but he was then dispossessed.
From there the ball ended up with Ekert who chipped City goalkeeper Shane Jackman for his hat-trick. The Saints co-captain then iced the win with his fourth with 15 seconds left on the clock.
