“THE less said about that one, the better. Let’s just try and forget about that one and move on.”
Western NSW Mariners FC coach Mick Godbier couldn’t hide his disappointment during or after Sunday’s match against Parramatta FC despite the fact that they picked up a 2-0 women’s State League win.
Watching the match, it was easy to understand why as his side spent almost the entire contest camped in the opposition half without being able to capitalise.
For the whole 90 minutes at Proctor Park, the visitors were at least one short. For around 30 minutes in the second half, their numbers were cut to nine thanks to injuries.
Spectators could have been forgiven for thinking Mariners goalkeeper Jess Daymond was another onlooker who had simply wandered too far onto the field, such was the lack of ball up her end.
“We probably had 80 per cent possession in that game and spent most of that in their half, it wasn’t real pretty,” Godbier said.
“They parked most of their players behind the ball and sometimes in a situation like this one, you actually have too much time to use the ball.
“In hindsight we probably could have approached it more like a training drill and really focused on one-touch efforts and moving it on as quickly as possible.
“It was one of those days.”
It didn’t look so bad initially as the Mariners created plenty of half-chances early, resulting in a goal to Kristy Collingridge in the 21st minute.
Given the Mariners have been scoring plenty of goals this season, they would have expected to significantly add to their tally. But the timing clearly wasn’t there on Sunday.
Poor last passes, mistimed runs, and errant shooting meant that the one goal lead remained through until half-time and it stayed that way well into the second period.
Finally with 20 minutes to play, Megan Embleton found herself on the end of a perfect Jess Salomoni cross from the right side and calmly put away their second.
The commitment of the opposition couldn’t be faulted as they defended grimly and did their best to spoil the Mariners’ attacking thrusts.
But there was an overwhelming sense that the home team were simply not on their game.
The one major positive for Godbier’s team was the fact that they didn’t allow the pattern of the game to force them into shooting indiscriminately and losing patience.
“It is very difficult as a coach to try and have an impact in a game like that,” he said.
“I just told them to try and play at our own tempo. It is hard when you’re expected to go out and put a heap of goals on.
“But they did the right thing and kept trying to move the ball around and create good chances. It just wasn’t happening for us today.
“We go to Sydney for a double-header this weekend, so I’d like to just move on from this game and focus on the next job.”
