BRAD Shiels has enjoyed some of the biggest moments in his racing career so far this year – including testing himself in the Bathurst 12 Hour – but the talented driver undoubtedly has more to offer.
He proved that late last month at Wakefield Park.
Competing in the second round of the NSW Production Sports Series, Shiels took out both the sprint event and the following day’s one hour endurance race in a Porsche 997 Cup S.
With a strong weekend from team-mate and car owner Andrew Macpherson as well – he finished second in his individual sprint – the pair currently hold the lead in the championship.
It follows from a strong opening round from Bathurst product Shiels on his home track in April, where he came from the rear of the field at Mount Panorama to claim an unlikely podium finish.
Shiels opted to sit out most of the Saturday qualifying session at Wakefield to have a late crack at the circuit. It was a tactic that paid off.
He took three laps to make his statement – a 57.02 seconds effort which was two and a half seconds below the race lap record.
In the race itself Shiels did not make the best start from pole position, but soon recovered to earn another podium finish.
“I’ve done a few 57s around the track before, but that was a pretty good time for that day in the freezing conditions,” Shiels said of his qualifier.
“At the race start I had Barton Mawer next to me on the front row in the Lotus and he got the better jump. I had a bit of wheel spin, but I managed to get the lead back by the first corner and it was all good from there.
“I managed to eventually get it out to a 12-second gap by the finish.”
Macpherson improved one spot from his third place in qualifying to finish as runner-up in his sprint race.
The combined qualifying results from the duo also saw them secure pole for the weekend’s main event, the one hour race.
Macpherson started that race and he enjoyed an excellent stint.
It meant he was able to hand the car over to Shiels in the lead.
From there the gap blew out to the final margin of a full lap as the Bathurst driver blew away his rivals.
“It was a perfect weekend. It doesn’t really get better than that,” Shiels said.
“Andrew drove really well throughout the weekend. He didn’t make any mistakes.
“That was our Cup S car which is different from the full spec GT car we used at the Bathurst 12 Hour. It drives a little bit differently, but I have driven it recently at Phillip Island.”
Next on the cards for Shiels is the Australian GT Championship’s third round at Townsville from July 10 to 12.
