They were part of the Dogs for Diggers program which matches dogs with returned Diggers who are suffering from post traumatic stress.
The Australian-first program saves dogs from pounds and shelters and pairs them up with inmates at Bathurst Correctional Centre for training.
Trainer Teneka Priestly said the dogs provide assistance and companionship for Diggers who return from conflict.
During last week's training session the inmates ran their dogs through an agility course provided by the Greater Western All Breeds Obedience and Agility Club.
"Apart from having a bit of fun, it improves the bond between the handler and the dog," Ms Priestly said.
Ms Priestly said during the intensive four to six month training program the dogs learn how to provide comfort for the Diggers.
The program has been credited with saving not just the lives of the dogs, but the lives of ex and current Australian military personnel.
