Look close enough from tonight and you will find that the old TAFE building on William Street is looking straight back at you.
Illuminate Bathurst is back for a second time, with a range of digital projections telling the city’s modern day stories.
Projections on the old TAFE building will feature many Bathurst eyes – young, old, multicultural, you name it.
Esem Projects director Michael Killalea said people often look at, or admire, architecture like the old TAFE building on William Street, but “what if they started looking back at you” he asked.
“We like the idea of the street looking back at you,” he said.
“You’re looking at Bathurst and it’s looking back at you.”
Among the eyes that will be projected are some of Cirkus Surreal’s performers.
The digital projections will also feature on Bathurst Court House, in Ribbon Gang and Pedrottas lanes, as well as on the War Memorial Carillon, during the nine-day Illuminate Bathurst Winter Festival which kicks off tonight.
The silent disco will again be held in Ribbon Gang Lane, and Mr Killalea has encouraged people to bring along their own songs to play.
In May’s inaugural illumination, a blown globe impacted upon the show, but Mr Killalea said this time around the crew have spare globes and have catered for any possible technical fault.
Bathurst Visitor Information Centre manager Felicity Baines said they have had a good number of enquiries from people about the festival.
“You are getting people talking about it, word is definitely getting out,” she said. “We’ve already got a buzz in the city.”
Ms Baines expects crowds to the street fair to be big, but unfortunately there are two temporary ice rinks in Sydney this weekend that she said may draw crowds there rather than to Bathurst.
“It just means the Sydney people mightn’t come out, but those further west [of Bathurst] will,” she said.
Temperatures are predicted to only reach 11 degrees today and tomorrow, but Ms Baines encouraged people not to let that stop them attending.
“Yes, it’s going to be cold, but put on your woolies and just go and have fun,” she said.
Illuminations commence at dusk until 9pm from tonight through until Sunday, July 12.
