Shane David Ramsay, 35, of Spofforth Place in Kelso, appeared before magistrate Michael Allen in Bathurst Local Court.
The court was told police were patrolling Kelso on April 30 this year after reports three men were trying to break into cars in the area.
Police pulled over a car with three men inside, including Ramsay, in the car park of Foodworks Kelso at about 1.40am.
Checks on Ramsay revealed information that led police to search him, and they found a pocket knife with an eight-centimetre blade in his front jacket pocket.
Ramsay made full admissions to knowing he was in possession of the knife, saying: "I live in Kelso and I need it for protection."
Mr Allen convicted Ramsay, fining him $300 and ordering the weapon be forfeited.
He also ordered no action be taken in relation to a Section 9 Bond that already applied to Ramsay.
